NASCHA ROSE LATE IN the morning. Like other new moons, she’d spent most of the night inside the caves. Unlike Nascha’s people, Celeste’s colony was active late into the night.

In a nook nearby, Celeste slept curled against Yazwan. For all the years she’d kept guard over the stone giant, it was sweet to see him guarding her. He nodded and smiled at Nascha when she passed on her way out of the cave.

Reflections of the mountains colored the passage, red and orange and pink, like rays of the sun. Nascha emerged and surveyed the rim of the canyon. Tourists gathered overhead. The last few days of traveling proved she could stand among them unnoticed.

She searched out a secluded section among the rock formations, looking into the faces of trapped Hoodoos as she passed. Away from the prying eyes of the Tourists, she twirled slowly to test her ability to travel. The heat provided lift, but she didn’t have enough strength to carry her to the rim of the canyon. She wouldn’t be able to fly home.

Celeste had ridden the river, although a storm had carried her off course. If Nascha could make it to the Coyote, maybe she could soar off the waterfalls to gain lift for the rest of her journey. He had said she’d be back, after all.

Nascha whirled in the sand, taking advantage of the opportunity to disappear from the eyes of the Tourists.

She wasn’t a Tourist, and she didn’t blend with the people in Celeste’s canyon. She’d been welcomed by the Elders at every stop, but she still felt apart from them. She wondered about Gideon. If she had stayed to celebrate with him, would she have become part of his people? She wished she knew if the physical response he’d aroused in her was akin to joining, or if her experience with Devin was a better indication. Maybe neither one was accurate.

Nascha checked her hands—still solid. No new moon celebration, no sharing bodies.

She had more questions for the Coyote. He had invited her to his canyon. She wandered aimlessly into the caves, where Celeste caught up with her.

“I thought you’d left without saying goodbye!” Celeste threw her arms around Nascha.

“I didn’t want to wake you.”

“Can you fly?”

Nascha shook her head. “I’m going to try riding the river.”

“But the sand...”

“Is everywhere here, including in the river that will take me to the Coyote.”

“Just like he said.” Celeste cast a glance over her shoulder.

Yazwan had moved deeper into the cavern and was surrounded by dozens of people jumping around him. “I couldn’t have done this without you,” Celeste said. “Thank you.”

Water fell from Nascha’s eyes again, more this time. It must be part of the transformation she was undergoing. She stepped away, afraid Celeste would see the changes in her. “Where is the river? I need to get to the Coyote. He should be able to get me home.”

“I can go with you. You aren’t used to traveling on the water.”

“You should stay with Yazwan. Help him adjust to his new life,” Nascha said.
